A lot of attention has been paid to our increasingly diverse workplace. There are multiple differences including race, gender, generations, and thinking styles. Many historical events have occurred that have cleared the way to analyze these differences of men and women in the workplace. These gender differences are likely to exist in the way men and women influence, communicate, and lead. The male and female gender has always been viewed as two unique and different sets of people.

In order to accomplish these goals leaders must set strict rules and motivate their followers through rewards and bonuses. Followers who perform poorly will face consequences to compensate lack of quality performance. Male leaders are direct and straight forward and do not like to change their structure unless it is completely necessary. Male leaders also use direct communication styles. Direct communicators tend to say whatever is on their mind. Their message is expressed by the words they use, and they depend on the literal interpretation of them. The main goal of communication is to “get or give” information. Direct communication is a component of low-context culture where a verbal message is direct and the words are more important than the context. In direct communication the sender is responsible for clear and effective communication. Male leaders tend to transmit a message through words rather than nonverbal actions, as they see communication as a way of exchanging information and ideas.
Now, we will look at the leadership styles of women and compare them to those of men. Contrary to men, women have been known to have a transformational leadership style. Transformational leadership is a type of leadership that inspires followers to make positive changes in their expectations, perceptions and motivations to work towards common goals. Throughout time we have been presented with primarily male leaders. Royalty, founders, presidents and monumental frontrunners have been roles held by men as rule. With progressive thinking and changes in equality, we have since started seeing strong female leaders, too. Although women must still fight for equality and fair treatment in the realm of leadership, women in important roles of leadership are finally a reality we see. Major female leaders are present in all realms of the working world—leading many professional and governmental organizations.
Within professional industries, we still see more male CEOs, CFOs, board members and other leaders, but women continue to blaze a trail to leadership and better equality for working females daily. Some examples of strong female leaders in the professional sphere include Melinda Gates and Oprah Winfrey. These women have not allowed our patriarchal society to stop them, and have risen to the top as successful leaders. Melinda Gates, a philanthropist of the United States, has given back immensely to her community. She and her husband, Bill, head a scholarship fund known as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Founded in 1998, the foundation has given more then twenty-six million dollars in grant monies to students in need while pursuing higher education. Similarly to Melinda, Oprah Winfrey is known for her philanthropic efforts as well. In addition to her compassions, she is the leader of the Oprah Winfrey Network—the source of her massive success. Like women of professional industries, women in government have also overtaken roles that were previously filled by men only.
Centuries ago, people would have scoffed at the suggestion of a female fully in charge. Female leaders were often treated as child bearers and figureheads, while their male counterparts handled any political decisions. Since these dark ages, women have demanded their rights and have reclaimed positions of leadership. Women like Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama are prime examples of leading women in government. Hilary Clinton is best known for her work at Secretary of State in the United States, and her advocation for human rights (focusing on the shirked rights of women). Michelle Obama is also a woman of power as the first lady. She takes an active role in this position, working to promote healthy lifestyles and fight childhood obesity.
Without women like Melinda Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama our society would not be as successful as it is today. These women are just as influential as men of leadership. We must continue to advocate for equality, encourage women to take on leadership and in turn, change the world.
